The Harp Festival Venue

The Festival will be held at the Conservatorium of Music at Massey University's Wellington campus in Wallace St.

The Massey Conservatorium is very centrally located, easy to find from the motorway, and there will be adequate parking over the weekend. We will have ample space there for our activities.

Because there is no accommodation associated with the Massey Conservatorium, participants will have to find their own accommodation. To assist with this, there is a list of the closest establishments at the end of this web page.

The Massey Conservatorium offers

The staff of the Conservatorium are supportive of the Harp Festival, and have offered a generous discount-for-sponsorship deal for the event. (Details on the sponsorship page.)

There are no dining or restaurant facilities associated with the Massey venue. The Committee will provide morning and afternoon teas (volunteers to assist will be welcome, especially any adults accompanying children), which will help to keep the cost down. We will arrange for outside caterers to provide lunches during the Festival. The Festival dinner will take place at Scorpio's Welsh Restaurant in Island Bay, which is on a convenient bus route from the Massey Conservatorium.

The Gala Concert will be held in the Ilott Concert Chamber in the Wellington Town Hall. This is a pleasant, small auditorium (it seats 350) with tiered seats affording an excellent view to the entire audience, and good acoustics. It is well suited to solo harps and small chamber ensembles with harp. It will provide ample seats for members of the public in addition to Festival participants.

Accommodation

There will be Rugby Sevens matches and National Swimming Championships in Wellington during Waitangi Day weekend 2004, and accommodation in Wellington will be scarce, so you are advised to book early. We understand that accommodation is already hard to find.

To assist Festival participants in finding their own accommodation, here is a list of the hotels and motels which are closest to the Massey Conservatorium. They vary enormously in price and quality. The Festival Committee is not in a position to make any recommendations about where to stay. Participants will have to choose on the basis of their own budgets. Please remember that you will keep your own costs down in motels if you book a unit as a group, and fill the beds in the unit. That will also help to fit more people into the available accommodation. (For instance, we understand that one of these motels has a penthouse at $400 which sleeps 8, i.e. works out at $50 per person per night.) If you will be bringing a car, you can, of course, choose to stay further away.
